• Slender-bodied damsel lies
• in sun at water’s edge, dreaming:
• across the pool dragon flies
• and spies her gleaming.


• He yaws, descends, his stiff wings whirr:
• she darts, an irridescent thread:
• he wheels and swoops and captures her
• and bites her dead.


• He grips, devours her on the wing,
• precise and skilful navigator,
• circling, banking, hovering —
• ace aviator.


• Resplendent in lapis livery spun
• from luminous silk of noon sky,
• his latticed wings slivers of sun:
• emperor dragonfly.
